How to Care for Faux Fur Hats and Accessories

Faux fur hats and accessories are a cozy, cruelty-free way to elevate any cold-weather look — but they do need a little TLC to stay looking their best. Whether you own a Silky Soft Faux Fur Bear Hat, a pair of Large Faux Fur Animal Hats, a Faux Fox Fur Hat, or a Mink Faux Fur Hat, the care tips below will help you keep them fluffy, fresh, and long-lasting.

1. Brush Regularly to Restore Fluffiness

Over time, faux fur fibres can flatten with wear. Use a wide-tooth comb or a soft-bristle pet slicker brush to gently work through the fibres in the direction of the pile. Always brush lightly — avoid tugging or pulling, which can loosen the backing. A quick brush after each wear goes a long way toward keeping that full, plush look.

2. Spot Clean Stains Promptly

For small stains or marks, spot cleaning is your safest approach. Dampen a clean cloth with cool water and a tiny amount of mild, gentle detergent (like baby shampoo or a wool-safe soap). Dab — don't rub — the affected area gently. Rubbing can mat the fibres and spread the stain. Once the mark lifts, blot the area with a clean damp cloth to remove any soap residue.

3. Avoid Excess Water

Faux fur is typically made from synthetic fibres (like acrylic or polyester) attached to a fabric or knit backing. Submerging your hat in water or running it through a standard wash cycle can damage the backing, cause matting, and alter the shape. Unless the care label on your specific item states otherwise, avoid machine washing and soaking. When in doubt, spot clean only.

4. Dry Properly — Never Use Heat

After spot cleaning, reshape your hat gently with your hands and allow it to air dry completely at room temperature. Keep it away from direct sunlight, radiators, hair dryers, and tumble dryers — heat can melt or warp synthetic fibres, permanently damaging the texture. Lay it flat or hang it in a well-ventilated spot until fully dry before wearing or storing.

5. Store Carefully to Maintain Shape

When you're not wearing your faux fur hat, store it somewhere cool, dry, and away from direct light. Avoid compressing it under heavy items, which can flatten the fibres over time. A breathable fabric bag (not plastic) is ideal for keeping dust off while allowing air circulation. If your hat has a structured shape, stuff it lightly with tissue paper to help it hold its form.
